KESDA Board Meeting Minutes

28 December 2006

The KESDA board met on December 28,2006.  Voting members present were Krista Kohl, Kelly Whalen, Kellie Crump, and Jill Shoulta.  Director Ed Smith presided.  Minutes were taken by co-director, Betsy Smith.

1. Krista Kohl made a motion to bring back Group Interp at the high school level.  Voting members reported that many coaches had expressed disappointment that it had not been made a permanent event.  The board voted unanimously to include the event in this year’s High School forum.  More specific rules will appear in the revised version of the KESDA handbook.

2. The experimental event for the High School forum is After Dinner Speaking. In order that it not crowd existing flights, Krista Kohl moved that it be run at the same time as Group Interp, with Round 3 occurring during the dance.  This passed unanimously.

3. Kellie Crump  made a motion that KESDA adopt the criteria Dr. Smith had compiled for After Dinner Speaking.  This passed unanimously.

After Dinner Speaking

An original, humorous speech by the student, designed to exhibit sound speech composition, thematic, coherence, direct communicative public speaking skills, and good taste. This event is a public address event meant to take an important topic and make greater sense of it through the use of humor. The speech should not resemble a night club act, an impersonation, or comic monologue.   Students and coaches must therefore use all of the criteria for researching, writing, and delivering a speech.  These include a coherent, pointed and relevant message that is the product of credible and appropriate research. While audio-visual aids may or may not be used to supplement and reinforce the message, they should be appropriate to the message and situation.  The time limit is 6-10 minutes, with a 30 second grace period.

4. Kellie Crump made a motion that we not include On-The-Spot reporting in Broadcasting.  This passed unanimously.

5. Dr. Smith reported that the Savings Bonds had been purchased for all the 2006 winners whose necessary information had been submitted by their coaches.  Any coaches who have not sent in the information on their team’s first place winners should contact the Smiths or re-send the information and the bonds will be processed.

This process needs to be simplified.  At this year’s forums, envelopes with forms to fill out will be handed to all the winners at the awards banquet.  Forms will be due within a week.  A reminder will be sent three days after that.  Forms will go to the bank three weeks following each forum.
