KESDA Fall Board Meeting

 

The KESDA board meeting took place on September 27th, 2008.  Members present included Ed and Betsy Smith, Krista Kohl, Kellie Crump, Ryan Ray, Steven Jones, and Joey Mau.

 

The balance in the Kentucky Bank account is 892.04.  The balance in our account through Georgetown College is 8552. 58.  Total funds: 9444.62

 

A motion was made to change the name from KESDA Senior Forum and KESDA Junior Forum to KESDA Senior State Tournament and KESDA Junior State Tournament.  This passed unanimously.

 

A motion was made to readjust the tournament’s first day schedule.  It passed unanimously.  Registration will now be 12:00-2:30 on Thursday.  The meeting will be at 3:15.  The first round will begin at 4:00.

 

The need for more judges is critical.  After much discussion, a judging committee was formed to devise strategies for expanding the judging pool, creating qualifications for a “clean” judge, and bringing in more “X” judges.

This committee consists of Joey Mau, Kellie Crump, Ryan Ray, and Steven Jones.

 

It was decided that college freshman may be allowed to judge at both the Senior and Junior State Tournaments.

 

A motion was made to change Duo Improvisation times.  This passed unanimously.  The High School will have three minutes to prep and three to six to perform.  The Middle School will have five minutes to prep and three to six to perform.

 

A motion was made to add an etiquette section to the handbook.  It passed unanimously.

 

Inclement weather possibilities were discussed.  If weather knocks out some teams, it might be feasible to reschedule the whole tournament and proceeding with a two-round tournament.

 

New guidelines were established for the Traveling Trophy.  To be eligible, a team must:

 

           - Consist of at least seven students

           - Have at least 20 entries

           - Have been at the KESDA tournament three years consecutively

 

Squad efficiency will be used to determine the best performance.  No team may win two years in a row.

 

A motion was made that at both Senior and Junior levels events with 50 or more competitors be able to break to quarterfinals IF there are enough judges.  (Currently, an event must have 60 entries to break to quarterfinals.)  This passed unanimously.

 

A motion was made to open up declamation to 9th through 12th graders. This passed unanimously.

 

A motion was made to rename the Founder’s Award to the KESDA Hall of Fame Award.  This passed unanimously.  Nomination should be made to the KESDA board in the form of a letter by February 1st.  The award will be presented at the Senior or Junior banquet, depending on the winner’s affiliation.

 

A motion was made that Middle School students be allowed to have multiple characters in Duo Acting.  This passed unanimously.

 

A motion was made to have no experimental event at the 2009 tournament.  This passed unanimously.

 

A motion was made that within the board there would always be one person responsible for maintaining the website and one person to be in charge of updating and making corrections to the handbook.  This passed unanimously.

 

Dr. Smith announced that all speeches should now be turned in on CD, along with the signature sheet.

 

A motion was made to add a page to the handbook to be used as a signed verification that all judges have been trained and are qualified to judge any event.  The passed unanimously.
